Back to Basics

Hydrology is the estimation of rainfall to runoff processes that leads to the determination of flood flow magnitude or flow rate like m3/s. The first step is the creation of a catchment elevation model or DEM/DTM. Common models used include RAFTS, RORB, URBS, and WMBN.

Hydraulics is the process of utilizing the flow rate data and computational models to estimate the flow velocity, depth, bed shear stress power, and level. Common models include HEC-RAS, XP, and TuFLOW

Due to losses and catchment antecedent conditions, rainfall magnitude (AEP) as % or 1 in X is generally higher/rarer the corresponding flow and level.
